How to price your services as a new business
Written by Jack Harrington and Gabriel Pozo, the founders of Urban Media, Melbourne. Updated .
New businesses usually price too low to win work, then struggle to raise prices later. A simple method gets you a number you can defend.
General guidance from the studio, not financial or tax advice. GST points were checked against business.gov.au and the ATO on 15 October 2026.
Step 1: know your costs
- Direct costs: materials, software, subcontractors, ad spend.
- Your time: what a day of your work needs to earn after expenses.
- Overheads: insurance, tools, accounting, your website and domain.
Step 2: look at the market
Find three to five competitors and note what they charge and what is included. You are not copying them, you are working out where you sit: cheaper, similar or premium.
Step 3: price on value, not hours
What is the result worth to the customer? A fixed package with a clear scope is easier to buy and easier to deliver than an hourly rate.
Step 4: decide how GST shows
If you are registered for GST, say whether the prices you show include it. You must register at $75,000 turnover, and can register earlier. Show prices consistently across the website and quotes.
Step 5: show the price
A published price or starting price filters out the wrong enquiries and builds trust. If you cannot show a price, explain what drives it.
Where Urban Launch fits
Urban Launch publishes its own prices, ex GST, for the same reason. We build the website and the quote and booking flow so your price is clear and the enquiry is easy to make.

Start with a Launch Call
Live and generating enquiries within 45 days, or we keep working at no extra cost until you are. The Launch Call is where we check it is the right fit before we book anything in. For a real example, read the Airwize case study (12 conversions, meaning leads that became sales, in the first month of Google Ads from $70 of ad spend, our figures). You can also read how a launch package compares with hiring separately, or go to the packages and prices on the homepage. If you are setting up from scratch, see the business start-up package.
