Social media profiles for a new business
Written by Jack Harrington and Gabriel Pozo, the founders of Urban Media, Melbourne. Updated .
A new business does not need every platform. It needs the one or two where its customers are, set up properly, and the others held under the same name so nobody else takes them.
Here is how to choose and how to set them up.
Choose where your customers are
- Local services and trades: Facebook and Instagram, plus a Google Business Profile.
- Visual products and hospitality: Instagram and TikTok.
- Professional services: LinkedIn, plus Google.
- Anything with demonstrations or how-to: YouTube.
Hold the handles
Even on platforms you will not use yet, create the account under your exact business name so the handle is yours. Fill in the basics so it does not look abandoned.
Set each one up the same way
- The same name and handle across platforms where you can.
- Your logo as the profile picture, in a version that reads small.
- A banner or cover in your brand colours.
- A one-line bio that says what you do and where.
- Your website, and a phone or email that matches the rest of your listings.
What to post
- Real work and real people, not generic quotes.
- One clear offer now and then, with how to enquire.
- Short clips of the work, which usually travel further than still images.
Keep it sustainable
Pick a rhythm you can keep up for a year, even if that is once a week. Consistent and small beats busy for a month and silent for six.

Common questions
- How many social platforms should a new business use?
- One or two done well, where your customers already are. Claim the handles on the others so the name is yours.
- Should my business use a personal profile or a business page?
- Use a business page or professional account, so the audience belongs to the business and more than one person can manage it.
Start with a Launch Call
Live and generating enquiries within 45 days, or we keep working at no extra cost until you are. The Launch Call is where we check it is the right fit before we book anything in. For a real example, read the Airwize case study (12 conversions, meaning leads that became sales, in the first month of Google Ads from $70 of ad spend, our figures). You can also read how a launch package compares with hiring separately, or go to the packages and prices on the homepage.
